I applied the Rust-Oleum Spar Varnish in 6 "half coats". I'd coat half the paddle (simply holding the other side with my off hand), let it try, and then coat the other half with a slight overlap. I moved the overlap line each time (where the yellow lines are) and it was not noticeable where the overlaps occurred. I used Tack Cloth before each application but did not sand between applications (as a small test sand with 600 grit didn't produce good results). The end result was 3 total coats of varnish on the entire paddle.
