Hethgard is among several Fortress Worlds in the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Iron_Collar Iron Collar] which is located in the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Jericho_Reach Jericho Reach] sector of [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Segmentum_Ultima Segmentum Ultima]. More than 4000 [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Terra Terran] years ago Jericho Reach (then called Jericho Sector) was lost to the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Imperium_of_Man Imperium of Man]. Since 777.M41, the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Achilus_Crusade Achilus Crusade] has been waged to bring Jericho Reach back under Imperial control.
Hethgard, and its sister Fortress Worlds defend the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Well_of_Night Well of Night], and within it the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Jericho-Maw_Warp_Gate Jericho-Maw Warp Gate], from the varied threats of the, still largely unconquered, Jericho Reach. Additionally they serve as command centers and launch points for the Achilus Crusade. Hethgard itself is the primary command center for the [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Achilus_Crusade#The_Orpheus_Salient Orpheus Salient] of the Achilus Crusade.
